The Inspiration - Wiki-Ed Poetry

Page history last edited by Kelli McGraw 12 years, 1 month ago

I was inspired to create this wiki by the work of Janette Hughes and Sue Dymoke with the 'Wiki-Ed Poetry Project': http://wiki-ed-poetry.pbworks.com/

Read more about their project in:

Hughes, J. and Dymoke, S. (2011). "Wiki-Ed Poetry": Transforming preservice teachers' preconceptions about poetry and poetry teaching. Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. (55)1, pp.46-56.

I think having a poetry forum is a fantastic idea!
-Preservice teachers are able to jump online whenever they have a spare chance-therefore not miss out on any information
-Are able to look at other poetry that they may not have seen/ explored in the past
-Are able to use poetry from the forum in their future English classes

Agree w Jess. It makes great sense (albeit scary perhaps) to bring poetry 'in from the cold' so it is not a silo activity, to a collaborative environment in class. I checked out the resource above, and then found an EARLIER article by Janette Hughes and Sue Dymoke (2008) in English Teaching: Practice and Critique December, 2009, Volume 8, Number 3

Title: Using a poetry wiki: How can the medium support pre-service teachers of English in their professional learning about writing poetry and teaching poetry writing in a digital age?

I agree with both of the comments above, Kate W and Jess. A poetry forum is not just a great idea for pre-service teachers or in-service teachers, but is a great idea for students studying poetry at school as well. Even if it is only used as a discussion type forum on the school's class website, it would allow for students to talk to each other about poetry, complete tasks about it while seeing what others had done. There is so much that this could bring to the table to both teachers and students, not only bringing people back to poetry, but using it in a common medium - technology!
